Our visual system gains much of its impressive capability from selective focus. For example, only a tiny portion of our visual image is perceived at high resolution at any point in time (foveal vision). The rest is maintained at higher resolution through a combination of visual processing and frequent updates of a mental model. Similar principles apply to adaptation, focus and many other elements of vision. Consumer gaze technology allows us, for the first time, to leverage these known principles in realistic consumer environments such as HD TV and mobile displays.
